Millennials in the Workplace - The Luxury of Work

I came across this article titled "The Choice of Work" the other day and felt that it captured "the mindset and outlook of a young, "Millennial Worker" better than anything that I've read/heard/seen to date.

I still can't figure out if this outlook is "good" or "bad."  While I admire the idealism - the author (rather, the entire generation) might be setting themselves up for massive disillusionment....if this hasn't already set in.

I guess these are the luxuries that we are all afforded in a rich society.  In the Depression (or practically anytime prior to 1950) the emphasis was on survival, sustenance, safety and their families.

There was no "Choice of Work" - rather, it was "The Luxury of Work."

The alternatives to "work" were crime or death.

Today the alternatives to "work" are:  perpetual student-life, living with mommy/daddy, "travel Europe," Starbucks or Plasma Donations.

Note:  This is coming from a workaholic, cynical, sarcastic Generation X-er.

No Ice At The North Pole

"It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year."

"If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above."

Sounds good to me.

Earth Station at Full Moon

An Altadena neighbor of mine, Bill Westphal, works for JPL and has been working at the AT&T Satellite Earth Station nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu.  The Earth Station provides voice and data service to Southeast Asia, several South Pacific Islands and the Antarctic.

Bill snapped this shot last night.  The full moon illuminated the 32 meter antennae nicely. The streak is an airplane that was crossing the sky during the 30 second exposure:

Kid Rock Turns On Warner Music Group

"Atlantic Records, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group, asked one of its stars, Kid Rock, to publicly denounce file sharing. Instead, Kid Rock publicly denounced Warner Music, while telling fans to download away."

I love it.

Exhaustive Analysis of The Sopranos Final Episode

Many people have been debating exactly "what happened" in the final episode of The Sopranos.

As I stated here, it seemed very straight forward that Tony got whacked.

For all of you in doubt, here is an exhaustive analysis of "what happened" putting to rest any other odd ideas.

McCain Says, "It's a Google" - Alienates "the young vote"

"It's a Google"

Yesterday, McCain talked about the methods and tools he is using to vet his Vice Presidential candidates.  Unfortunately, instead of sounding hip, intelligent and "with it" he ended up sounding like a 71 year old clueless man who "doesn't understand how those computers work."

At a press conference McCain said,

"You know, basically it's a Google," he said to laughter at a fund-raising luncheon when asked how the selection process was going. "What you can find out now on the Internet -- it's remarkable."

I don't know what "..it's a Google" could possibly mean?   "It's a Google"???????

Nanny State - Minneapolis

The Minneapolis City Council passed an ordinance that prevents you from idling your car engine longer than 3 minutes - a function many people do to warm up their cars in the winter - AT THEIR HOME.
