Decluttering My Mind

Bono + NYT + Frank = Good

Bono-190 Bono posted his first Opinion piece in the New York Times this past Friday (January 9, 2009).

What a refreshing and entertaining piece from the New York Times - good for them!  It is a suprisingly lyrical piece - that sounds a lot like Bono speaking in an interview - it feels real.  (no word on whether he has a ghost writer or not).

The best part about the piece is that you can click on an audio version of Bono reading the op-ed himself - the Irish accent makes it sound even better than it reads.

The New York Times takes it even further and includes the 1969 recording of Sinatra singing "My Way."

You can read it all here.

Great job NYT.  I can't believe I'm writing this.

A Cat's Diary

Day 983 of my captivity.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an Attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to
my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and Snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously Retarded.

The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the Guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an Elevated Cell, so he is safe.

For now.

Traveling Overseas with Children (Flying with Toddlers and Infants)

Last month we took a two week vacation ("holiday" for non-Americans) in England.

My goal was to publish this synopsis as soon as we returned, but alas, this past month has been particularly challenging as we (mainly the kids) continue to adjust to the time differences between the UK and Los Angeles.

The purpose of this post is to help those parents who are filled with anxiety and doubt about "whether or not to travel overseas with my child(ren)."  And, as a result of the foiled terrorists plot to blow up British Airway flights over the Atlantic and with new security regulations for airport travelers, this question seems to be even more difficult to answer.

Let me make this really simple for you.  The answer to the question is:  "Just Do It."

Yes, it will be difficult and challenging but you will live.  You will be exhausted (as will your children) but you will live.  As an adult, I hope you have figured out that life is hard - and that it's the difficulties that make it worthwhile and rewarding.

But, in spite of my optimism, you may have a wife (like me) who is a bit more reticent.  I'll attempt to keep her perspective throughout this post as well.  And, while I can't speak for her she has continued to 'suffer' through our travels for three years now and she is still alive as well.  I also want to be clear that none of our trips have been forced or necessary; we've chosen to get on each and every flight.  And, we'll probably do it again.

How Not to Get Rich

"Reading for pleasure, reading a novel while you are on the bus or the train or the subway, reading a biography instead of returning all your boss's e-mails, reading philosophy in the back of a seminar that your corporate team sent you to, reading a short prose poem translated from Spanish by your favorite Chilean playwright in the coffee shop, reading a movie review on line at the place where you pay bills when you are too late to mail them--just reading novels and books in general will greatly aid you in your pursuit not to be rich, if only in their sheer time-as-money-wasting capacity.  It makes a practicing nonbazillionaire like myself tremble to consider how much money I could lose reading Anna Karenina."
