I grew up surfing on the Gulf Coast of Texas (yes there are occasionally waves....usually during hurricane season), so I've always been fascinated by waves around the world.
I've seen photos of waves of all sizes: 40' Waimea Bay, 50' Jaws, 35' Todos Santos, 60' Outside Log Cabins, Cortes Bank, etc...
But this wave looks meaner and thicker than anything I've ever seen photographed:
An Altadena neighbor of mine, Bill Westphal, works for JPL and has been working at the AT&T Satellite Earth Station nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu. The Earth Station provides voice and data service to Southeast Asia, several South Pacific Islands and the Antarctic.
Bill snapped this shot last night. The full moon illuminated the 32 meter antennae nicely. The streak is an airplane that was crossing the sky during the 30 second exposure:
